Windmill Furnal was born from a transformative personal journey. In 2018, our founder Maria Ionescu found herself at a crossroads after 15 years in the corporate world. Despite her professional success, she felt disconnected from her purpose and struggled with burnout. This led her to embark on a year-long sabbatical exploring various personal development methodologies across Asia and Europe.
Upon returning to Bucharest in late 2019, Maria was determined to create a space where others could access the transformative tools she had discovered. She partnered with Alexandru Popescu, a mindfulness expert, and Elena Dumitrescu, a relationship coach, to establish a center that would address the whole person - mind, body, and spirit.
The name "Windmill Furnal" symbolizes our core philosophy: just as windmills harness natural energy and transform it into something useful, we help people harness their inner potential and convert it into meaningful personal change. The word "Furnal" draws from Romanian folklore, representing the hearth or center of transformation.
We opened our doors in February 2020, just weeks before the global pandemic changed everything. Rather than retreating, we quickly adapted our programs to virtual formats, reaching even more people during a time when personal development tools were desperately needed. This resilience defined our early days and continues to be part of our ethos.
Since then, we've grown from a small studio with three coaches to a comprehensive personal development center with over a dozen specialists and thousands of graduates from our programs. In 2024, we expanded to our current location on Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, and in 2026, we'll open our second center in Cluj-Napoca, bringing our methodology to more communities across Romania.
